Graduation Hoods, What are They?

In the world of academics, a black squared hat with a bright colored tassel gives a reference to some form of a graduation. In some cases, a scarf like article of clothing is added to the graduation gown. However, unlike a high school graduation, these scarves are only added when one graduates from a university of some sort. These so called scarves are named academic hoods. The hoods purpose is to represent what the graduate is majoring or have gotten their degree in.The hoods usually include four different sections of colors; shell fabric, velvet edge, satin field, and satin chevron. The color of the velvet edge is determined by the major the graduate is studying. The satin field and chevron is there in order to represent the college or the university one is graduating from. The overall size and shape represents the type of degree: bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral. The narrow edge of the hood will get progressively longer when the level of education the graduate has obtained. Finally, the fabric shell color will just match the fabric color of the collegiac graduation gown, which will usually black but sometimes is another color depending on the degree-granting institution. Associate degrees use a special cowl instead of a hood
