Hot, iced, decaf, or flavored, 54% of Americans ages 17 and older are drinking coffee on a daily basis according to Americans live in a world where people are largely dependent on drinks such as coffee. Many people are suffering from the consequences of this need for coffee, more than people would first assume. There are many individuals who aren’t aware of the damage it is causing. Society is slowly figuring out these statistics on calorie count and average spending per month. Coffee shops are making a profit that is larger than necessary on the $5 coffee being bought every morning. That adds up for the customer on a budget. Also, one would be shocked by the amount of calories in an average Starbucks drink. Once society becomes aware of these issues and limits intake of coffee, a huge change can be made in the customer’s monthly budgets and dieting problems.
Coffee shop drinks are extremely overpriced. The shops are making an 80% profit from each $5-7 drink. That percentage should be lessened. All shops need to make a profit from sales but the coffee drinker pays the company much more than the coffee is actually worth. Shops are charging unnecessary amounts for the products as shown by the high levels of profit being made.

Instead of putting money into savings, teens blow it on a coffee. By cutting down daily coffee to once or twice a week can save thousands of dollars. Most people don’t know the amounts spent in the long run on this drink. Five dollars here and there shouldn’t make a difference, right? Keeping a company in business does require making a profit on the product. For example, paying the workers would be a need for money; however, these workers make minimum wage and there are only 2-4 people working at a time in the average sized shop. Workers do not cost the shops very much when an 80% profit is being made on every drink. The workers would each need to sell only 2-3 coffees an hour to pay one’s wages. Earning profit is important, but coffee shops are charging excessive amounts for the product.
When drinking excessive amounts of coffee, the calories also add up. A 16 oz. white chocolate mocha from Starbucks has 400 calories. For a female age 19-30 that is ¼ of the required daily calorie intake. This is as if one is adding another meal to the day. For people on a diet, coffee can destroy one’s whole meal plan. Remembering what one puts into the body in small stages can make a big difference.
In conclusion, society needs to cut down on the amount of money spent on these drinks and the shops need to lessen the prices of the product in the first place. Too much profit is made for how inexpensive it is to make. Lessening the purchases will make a sizeable difference in the debt of some Americans and the savings of monthly paychecks, the calorie intake will be cut down immensely, and make dieting much easier to successfully maintain. Overall, coffee does more harm than good for people when one is drinking it frequently.
