In order to do anything, to stop gangs and stop all these homicides, the stand that needs to be taken is, we need more people into the police force, that can meet the standards of a police officer. Then we will get all these men and women to stand up and help stop this violence. A quote from USA Today. “Gang conflicts and retaliatory violence drove the unacceptable increase in homicides.”
Three reasons for position are gang conflicts, retaliatory violence, and how these two drove the increase of homicides. Stated in USA Todays article,
“ Chicago routinely records more homicides annually than any other American city, but the grim January violence toll marks a shocking spike in violence in a city that recorded 29 murders for the month of January last year and 20 murders for the month in 2014.”
In addition to the jump in killings, the police department said there was aproximently 241 shooting incidents for the month of January, it is more then double the 119 incidents recorded last January. The rise in violence comes after the Chicago Police Department reported 468 murders in 2015, a 12.5% increase from the year before. There were also 2900 shootings, 13% more than the year prior, according to the police department records.
If we are willing to take a stand and get more police officers into the police force in Chicago then we can stop this violence and not have to worry about the increase of homicides anymore. By getting these people into the force then we will have enough men and women that have met the standards of a police officer and that have gone through all the training and classes that were necessary to become a police officer. The police officers that have this training and classes done could choose the men and women that volunteer to stop this violence. If we do this I think that we will not have to worry about the increase of homicides in Chicago. Stated in the article the USA Todays News wrote this “The police department says it has recently moved 350 officers and 31 sergeants from foot patrols into vehicles to help increase visibility in communities hardest hit by the rise of shootings and to improve their ability to quickly respond to incidents. “The department says it has also conducted a series of raids in the areas of the city it knows that has the most violence. One raid last week involved in 64 arrests, including 40 suspects who are known gang members, and the seizure of over $200,000 worth of drugs. Police say they also seized 19 weapons in the raid.”
Some opposing thoughts are; why not keep the same amounts of police officers in the police force, even, why would we want to risk our lives for the others getting killed. The local solution would be to try and get more people into the police force that meet the standards of an officer that have been through all the training and all the requirements that it takes to be a police officer and when we meet these expectations we will stop these gangs and violence.
In conclusion, in order to do anything against this problem, to stop these gangs and stop all these homicides, the stand that we need to take is, we need to try and get more people into the police force, that can meet the standards of a police officer, then we will get all these men and women to stand up and stop this violence.
