77 year-old woman dies on September 15 in Houston, TX from flesh-eating disease found in contaminated waters of Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey, a Category 3 hurricane, hit the area of Houston, TX on August 25, 2017. Harvey has caused destruction and chaos in areas including Belize, Nicaragua, the Honduras, and Louisiana. Among the many confirmed fatalities caused by Hurricane Harvey resides the fate of 77 year-old Texan woman Nancy Reed. Reed died on September 13th due to a lethal case of necrotizing fasciitis found in the contaminated floodwaters of Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Texas. Necrotizing fasciitis, a serious bacterial skin infection that spreads quickly and kills the body’s soft tissues, can be deadly in a very short amount of time, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nancy Reed contracted the flesh-eating disease when she fell inside a flooded home in Houston and broke her arm, allowing bacteria from the floodwaters to seep in through her cuts.
